I have a problem with my Time Capsule archives and I'd appreciate if anybody can help me.

As we know, the Time Capsule keeps back-ups, through Time Machine, that are more frequent the closer to the present we come. For one day it keeps one archive every hour. Going back more than a month, it retains one archive per week. I presumed that these archives would conflate all the files saved every hour during that week, but no. Going back through my Time Machine now (and every other way I can find to search the Time Capsule files), I realise that actually it just retains one of the archives of that week and any files saved during those that were not part of that archive seem to be lost. This matters a lot, as I work with sound and video editing and must delete large files from my laptop regularly if it is to stay functional. I was depending on the Time Capsule archives keeping them at least until it was full.

I really hope that these files are archived elsewhere on the Time Capsule, otherwise I have lost them for good. My Time Capsule still shows the same amount of space remaining as though these files were not deleted, so I hope they can still be recovered somehow. Is anybody able to help? I use a 1TB Time Capsule and barely half of it is used up yet - 650GB remain.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Matt,
Great summary! Apple's website over-simplifies and then the next level of information is a deep dive. This was perfect. Want to make sure I am on the right track. (I have been searching for this forever and can't find this specific setup. I have two MacBook Pros. I don't want to spend the bucks or deal with the slow transfer speeds of backing up wirelessly on Time Capsule. If I understand what you're saying, I should be able to buy a 1TB external hard drive, plug it in on alternating nights to each MacBook Pro using an ethernet connection, turn Time Machine on while connected and both MacBook Pros can be backed up (wired) on same HD. Is this correct? Thanks again for this great article.

Guru,

Here is the question that is concerning me with Time Machine. I use a macbook. I want to keep everything I do backed up on an external hard drive, but not on the laptop itself. For instance, If I put movies on the laptop to watch, then want to delete them to free up hard drive space. With Time Machine I can back up everything at once then delete it from the laptop, and have it backed up. But with future backups I will eventually get to the point where my initial backup will be deleted and I will lose all of that previously saved data. Is there a way to serially back up my data so that it will only add the new data to the backup while keeping the old data and never deleting it even if it is removed from the laptop?

Thank you
