When I go to manual set up of my airport extreme, "Create extended network" is never presented as an option. I'm using airport utility 5.5.3 and have an AirPort Extreme, 5th gen N router. I'm trying to use it as my base from which I will extend my network to my AP Express N.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Does anyone know if APEs will talk to a Netgear N300 wireless? Or, will Airport Expresses not play nice with the Netgear third party? I had to get a router for my panasonic internet tv. I am trying to extend the wireless using my APEs that I used to depend upon. I had them extended directly out of the modem and it wasn't bad, but wasn't the greatest (as one of the APE is b/g and it lowers the signal strength). However, if I could get the APE(n) to talk to the netgear router, I could eliminate the APE b/g and just use the APE(n) to get to the back of the house. The only other way I seem to be able to set this up is to have the APE tethered to the router via ethernet and use the b/g to get to the back of the house. But there seems to be some sort of interference going on (I checked the channels and the APES are on one channel, the netgear on another) with this set up. If I choose the APE network I get full strength for about 4 seconds, then down to just two "fan" bars.

Thanks for the tutorial, I am trying to stop the dropouts I have with my setup (Macbook pro, Ipad, Airport Extreme and Airport Express) by starting from scratch again. I have followed all your instructions but have a problem with the airport extreme in your section "Creating a Remote Base Station" I don't have the option to "Participate in a WDS network" in my drop down for WDS mode all I have available is create or extend or off ??? Any thoughts, I have made sure I have the most recent version of Airport Utility installed. Any thoughts ????

Sent you a note before but the "enter characters" crap dropped the message because I didn't do it correctly, You know, like a third grader.

I double click and get summary, base station, wireless, access. Above I get airport, internet, music, printings, advanced. Advanced gives me statistics and port mapping. And a note that says Allow SNMP or SNMP over WAN or wank your wan or whatever like any human would know why they would choose anything. But, thanks. At least I get to play.

Hi Gary,

I assume you have double clicked on your AirPort Express in the Airport Utility window so that its settings open in their own window (this is the "Advanced" window). From there, click on the "Wireless" tab (it may be in the "AirPort" section, if that's not already selected). Then, find the pop-up menu for the item called "Radio Mode." This is where you can select which type of radio connections you want to allow for the base station.

Matt, where is the mystery setup for "have the N router set up as being B/G/N compatible" hidden?
Obviously the ethernet goes into the internet connection, and with the usual apple settings of "join?" "participate?" "create" supposedly meaning something different....and I'm assuming WDS is the set up, again, since I haven't seen "set up yoiur N router as being B/G/N compatible" a choice, where is this choice hidden? Thanks.

Gary,
Ideally, the N router should be your main base station, with a G router being your relay/remote station. Of course, you'd need to make sure you have the N router set up as being B/G/N compatible, instead of N only. Otherwise, you G router can't see the N router. Finally, you need to have your internet connection going into your main base station, or it won't work.

I have a "G" and an "N" express. SHould I set the base station to be the "N" and the relay to be the "G" or the other way around? I couldn't get this to work at all today or yesterday (so far, total of 5 hrs spent).
