Once you start taking a few photos with your iPhone, it can become addictive. One of the things I’ve always wanted to be able to do is post photos of where I’m at (sporting events, vacation, house hunting, etc.) so that my friends and family can see them. While it’s possible to email photos to specific people, I’d rather post them on one of my web galleries from iPhoto. Luckily, this is pretty easy to do. Of course, to create web galleries in iPhoto, you need to subscribe to MobileMe.
Step 1: Make Sure You’ve Entered Your MobileMe Info in System Preferences & iPhone
If you haven’t done so, open System Preferences, click on the MobileMe preference, and from the Account tab, enter your MobileMe user name and password. Then quit System Preferences.
If you haven’t set up your MobileMe account on your iPhone, click the Settings button on the iPhone. Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and click on it. From this settings page, click on Add Account…, select mobileme and enter your user name and password. You can further configure your MobileMe settings after entering your information, if you prefer.
Step 2: Make a New MobileMe Album in iPhoto
First, open iPhoto. Then, from the File menu, select New Album. A new window will open up, and you should select the MobileMe tab, like so:
Looking at the above photo, we need to do three things:
- First, you need to name your new album (I chose “iPhone Photos”).
- Second, you need to check the box that says, Adding of photos via email. This is the critical button for getting MobileMe galleries to work with the iPhone. You can make any other selections here you like (including password-protecting the album), but you need to turn this feature on.
- Finally, click the Publish button, and you’re all set from the iPhoto end of things. iPhoto will start to synchronize the album, which, if empty, should take only a moment. You can feel free to add or subtract other photos from iPhoto. The online album will show a maximum of 500 photos.
Step 3: Adding a Photo from iPhone
Back on your iPhone, you can open the Camera application and either take a new photo or use an existing one:
- When looking at a photo in the Camera application, click the pop-out arrow button in the lower left-hand corner, then click Send to MobileMe.
- From here, a new window will pop up showing you which of your MobileMe albums you can post the photo to. You should see your new “iPhone Photos” album (or whatever you called it) listed. Click on that album, and your iPhone will post it! Then, anyone can view your web gallery and see the photo. You’re done!
Did this tutorial work for you? Do you have an easier way of accomplishing the same task? Are there other applications you use on the iPhone for posting photos on the web? Let others know in the comments.
