This is the first in (what I hope to be) a long running series of articles where I finally get around to answering your questions. I have many to sort through, so please keep them coming. My goal with this series is to answer the questions that will be most useful for a large audience. They are much more concise than my full articles, but I hope that they will give you a starting point for continuing your troubleshooting endeavors. To the mailbag…
From SR: Hi, i’m having trouble with my iphoto. Every time i download photos from my camera to iphoto, it loads in duplicate in the main library. Even the photo name is the same! How do i prevent this from happening? I’d appreciate your advice.
Hi SR. The first thing that comes to mind is that you have not told iPhoto to not import duplicates. The setting for this changes with every version of iPhoto, so it’s difficult to you exactly what to do in this case. When you connect a camera in the current version of iPhoto, you have the option to import your photos. Before you do, check the box that says, “Hide photos already imported from import view.” That way, you can’t select photos already imported.
In iPhoto 6, this setting was in Preference –> Photo Copying. You’d select “Don’t import duplicates,” but there was a bug that often caused duplicates to be imported anyway. In addition to all versions of iPhoto using the file name as a way to sort out duplicates, iPhoto also uses a date/time stamp from your camera and your computer. So, if your date and time get reset every time you turn on your camera, and this affects the date/time stamp on the photo file, you may continually get duplicates. The same holds true if your date and time on the computer are reset.
From Ben regarding “Fix a 10.5.6 Update Stuck at ‘Configuring Installation’”
Thanks for the post, but when I looked in my Library folder, there was no Updates folder in there. I ran a search on my mac and found another Updates folder, but that was empty.
Hi Ben. If you do not have this folder, then your computer does not have any pending updates (which means there are no updates that have been downloaded but not installed). My suggestion is to manually download the 10.5.7 combo update (which contains all the updates through 10.5.7) and try to install it. As always with a software update, there is a small risk of data loss or corruption.
From Mary: You mentioned in Nov 2008 you would explain how to use Handbrake to rip TV DVDs. I am new to your site and not sure I’m searching it correctly – have you explained this yet? I have been using MAC the Ripper/Handbrake for DVD Movies for about a year. I have been using PQDVD on my PC for TV shows for a very long time, but the PC crashed and I now am a full MAC.
Hi Mary. You are not the only one to request that I finish this guide, and I do intend to complete it, but it may take some time before it appears here. In the mean time, you can view Handbrake’s own Wiki documentation for additional help: http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/HandBrakeGuide. The main thing to know is that each episode will be its own “title” on the DVD, so if you’re ripping episodes of Seinfeld, look for the titles that are around 22 minutes. You’ll need to rip each title separately and give it its own name. Most DVDs place the episodes in chronological order, but some go out of order, so you may need to watch the videos after you are done encoding them to make sure you have them in the correct order. Good luck!

I have MacPro computer running Snow Leopard. Every time I start the computer I get a window that asks me if I want to load Rosetta. This program is required for software that runs on Power Macs. Since I am a new Mac user I don’t require that software. How can I stop this window from appearing.
Hi Ivar,
If you get Software Update asking you to install Rosetta every time you turn on your Mac, that probably means 1. That you have an application that is written only for the PowerPC, and 2. it is either part of your account’s login items, or it’s a LaunchAgent or Launch Daemon. Check your login items in System Preferences’ Accounts section to see if that’s the case. Software Update only asks you to install Rosetta when a PowerPC-only application is launched.
