Apple recently released the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. While installation has been smooth for most users, some people are having trouble getting the update to install. The most common symptom is that the installation begins but gets stuck at the “Configuring Installation” screen and simply never progresses.
If this is what is happening to you, there are a few ways to handle the problem:
- First, you’ll need to restart your computer so you can get back to the Desktop. From there, navigate to /Library/Updates. You can safely delete the files in this folder and then run Software Update again. The most common reason users are encountering this bug is that the Mac OS X update did not finish downloading. By deleting these files, you’ll be able to grab a fresh download.
- Alternatively, you can download the 10.5.6 combo updater. Instead of running Software Update, simply click the link in your web browser, download the updater, and install it yourself. This is a good suggestion anytime you want to be “ultra safe” with your installation. Often, users have trouble installing what is called the “delta” updater (meaning the small update that only installs the x.x.1 files — here 10.5.5 to 10.5.6). Downloading the combo updater ensures you truly have all the files necessary for the update. I’d still recommend deleting the files in /Library/Updates, but that’s up to you.
Did these troubleshooting steps work for you? Have any other problems with the update? Know of a better solution? Let people know in the comments section.

Thanks for posting this.
I got this problem trying to install QuickTime 7.6.2 and now when trying to install Safari 4.0 on a PowerBook G4 12″ (PowerBook6,8) and Leopard 10.5.7.
Unfortunately it didn’t help to clear the /Library/Updates/
It didn’t even work to download the Safari package from Apple’s site and install it with the Installer.
Sigh…
Hi,
Thanks for the post, but when I looked in my Library folder, there was no Updates folder in there. I ran a search on my mac and found another Updates folder, but that was empty.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
