Correction:
I meant to type the following:
Clicking on the Saved Searches in the left sidebar shows a list of all the Smart Folders. In some applications you need to choose "all" or "every" or "any file" so that the folders become enabled. Now a single click will show the search results.

Even better use of Save Search Smart Folders for me...
drag the home/username/Library/Saved Searches folder to the left sidebar instead of an individual search smart folder
The result is that using "Open..." in any application allows you to click on "Saved Searches", and then choose the one you want from the drop-down menu at the top of the dialog box.

[...] Roger really has two questions: 1. How can you get a list of files that you recently attached to mail messages in Apple’s Mac OS X Mail program? 2. How can you see this in an “Open File” dialog box? For the answer to the second question, click here to read Access Spotlight’s Saved Search Folders from Any Application.
